Introduction

With the CSV import feature, you can create multiple content items in contentbird at once—ideal for transferring existing content lists or large volumes of planned or published content.

Basic Principle

The import creates content tickets (data records)—not the actual content itself.
Texts must be added or inserted manually afterward.

Optional: Automated import of existing website content is available via support.

📍 Location:
Management → Content Import

1. Create CSV Template

After selecting a project, you will enter the import wizard.

There, you define:

  • number of content items (tickets)

  • which fields should be pre-filled

  • optional additional fields

You can then download the CSV template.

Important:
Column names (e.g. Title, Language) must not be changed, otherwise the import will fail.

2. Edit the CSV File

Working with IDs

Some fields use IDs instead of plain text (e.g. briefing templates):

  • each value has a unique ID

  • this ID must be entered in the CSV

Date Formats

Allowed formats:

  • DD.MM.YYYY (e.g. 01.05.2018)

  • YYYY-MM-DD (e.g. 2018-05-01)

Text Fields

The following fields are entered as plain text:

  • keywords

  • tags

  • multi-select fields

Format:
Comma-separated, without spaces

Example:
seo,content,strategie

Note:
Ensure consistent spelling to avoid duplicate entries.

Required Fields

Before importing, the following fields must be completed:

  • status

  • title

  • language

3. Save the File

Save the file in the correct format:

  • Excel: CSV UTF-8 (*.csv)

  • LibreOffice: CSV with appropriate delimiter settings

4. Upload CSV

In the final step of the import wizard:

  • upload the file via drag & drop

  • or select it via file manager

After Import

  • successfully imported records will be displayed

  • failed records are documented in a separate CSV file (“failed”)

  • you may receive an email notification

5. Google Search Console Import

For already published content, you can use a dedicated template.

Benefits

  • automatic import of ranking URLs from the last 3 months

  • includes keywords based on Google data

Special Notes

  • the URL is initially used as the title

  • the title is later automatically replaced (via page metadata)

  • URLs must not be removed

  • unreachable pages (404) are not imported

Additional Required Fields

  • status

  • type

  • title

  • language

  • publication URL

  • cost (use “0” if needed)

After import, performance data (e.g. rankings, traffic) from the last 3 months is automatically added.

Best Practices

  • Start with a minimal template, then expand

  • Carefully verify IDs

  • Use consistent naming (tags, keywords)

  • Always review the error file after import

  • Allow time for processing when importing large datasets

Conclusion

The CSV import is a powerful tool for efficiently transferring large amounts of content into contentbird. With well-structured data and properly prepared templates, you save significant time and ensure your content is organized correctly within the system.
