Overview

In contentbird, metrics like CPC (Cost per Click) and search volume are used to evaluate both the performance and the economic value of your content.

1. Content CPC – Calculation

The Content CPC is based on your actual performance:

Formula:
Costs ÷ unique page views

  • Basis: all unique page views (content reach)

  • Costs: one-time production costs of the content

Interpretation:

  • As traffic increases, the Content CPC decreases

  • Goal: be lower than Google Ads CPC

👉 This means your content generates traffic more efficiently than paid ads.

2. Content CPC on project level

On a project level, an average value is calculated:

Formula:
Sum of all Content CPCs ÷ number of contents

👉 This means:

  • Some content pieces may perform very efficiently

  • The average can still increase due to weaker content

➡️ Therefore, it’s worth analyzing performance on a per-content basis.

3. Search volume & Adwords CPC – Data sources

Keyword metrics are sourced from external tools:

  • keywordtool.io

  • kwfinder.com

Both tools ultimately rely on data from the Google Ads Keyword Planner.

4. Data updates

  • Search volume and CPC are updated every 30 days

  • The update cycle starts once a keyword is added to a keyword set

👉 Values may vary depending on timing.

5. Why data may be missing

In some cases, no search volume or CPC is displayed.

Common reasons:

1. Google Ads restrictions
Certain topics are excluded from advertising, such as:

  • drugs

  • weapons

  • sensitive health-related terms

👉 Example: keywords like “detox” or “CBD”

These won’t return data in the Keyword Planner—and therefore not in contentbird.

2. Indirect impact
Combined keywords may also be affected:

  • “digital detox”
→ affected due to the term “detox”

3. Data not yet available

  • Keyword was recently added

  • Data has not been updated yet

Important note

Even if no CPC or search volume is available:

  • Rankings can still be tracked

  • Organic traffic is still possible

👉 The keyword can still be valuable.

Best practices

  • Regularly compare Content CPC vs. Paid CPC

  • Identify highly efficient content

  • Validate missing keyword data in the Keyword Planner

  • Use multiple data sources for better decisions

  • Focus on trends, not just absolute search volume

Conclusion

CPC and search volume are key metrics for evaluating your content performance.
While Content CPC measures real efficiency, keyword metrics provide essential insights for planning and prioritizing your SEO strategy.
